Stephanie,

The last example (#6 showing your name in stitching) is just what I need, and I managed to get it to work on a crude path using GIMP without much difficulty. One limitation I found though is that GIMP has a maximum spacing for brushes of 200%. You can tweak the brush size from 0.01 to 10.0 of the original size, so with the right combination it should be possible to get a matching effect.

Thanks for both the brushes and this tutorial which really gets into some neat tricks one can do.

Dreich I had the same problem with the brushes being too light, and found out that I had to go to the FLOW ICON and change it to 100% instead of 25%

hope this helps.

@John: You'll only see it in certain situations. For instance, if you have the brush set to fade out in size as it goes along, and you set it to a really short brush stroke length, but the minimum size is 20px... you'll see the brush fade down to the 20px size and then even out. So, in some instances you'll see it, and others not. I'm not aware of any way to change it so that you can always see it or lengthen the brush stroke preview or anything, nope. Sorry!

Glad the tutorial helped, though!

@Amber: Hmm. I'm not sure what you mean about #1. Your brush tool doesn't work with any of the brush sets that don't come with Photoshop? I've never heard of that. Are they showing up to be able to select them, but then just aren't able to be used? I have NO idea what could cause such a thing. If they're not showing up, then you either don't have them in the right folder or they aren't unzipped. Check my tutorial on installing and using brushes to troubleshoot that part, if that's the case.

As for making brushes 2 colors, that's actually covered in this tutorial. It's under "Color Dynamics" and is explained just above the preview of the different colored leaves on this page.

Hope this helps!

Great Tutorial !

There are two things that's are bothering me tough.
1: My brush tool doesn't work if I load brushes.
2: How do you make brushes 2 colour, like for trees?

Thanks ^^

Great Tutorial!

When I change an option such as minimum diameter in shape dynamics I do not see a change in the brush stroke preview... is there any way I can change this?

I know it works.. I just cannot see it in the brush stroke preview

@Joy: That's what layers are great for. You can use a brush on its own layer, and then just delete that layer if you don't like it. At ANY point. And layers are easy. Just create a new layer in the bottom right-ish corner of the layers palette, and voila! You've created a new layer. You can switch back and forth between them by clicking on them. Think of a layer like one of those clear sheets of plastic that those transparency slides in school were on. Each layer can be removed and manipulated on its own, and only contains the stuff from that one layer.

Maybe I'll make a whole tutorial on layers one of these days.

Hope this helps, and glad I've been able to be of some assistance!

Thank you so much for a very straight forward tutorial on using this stitch. I finally understand how to tweak the brushes ... but have a long way to go to learn how to make my own. I still need to learn how to make a brush into it's own layer ... but that will be later. I just need the time to sit and learn one thing at a time. You are making it much easier.
CS3 is a huge program in it self so it's a daily learning curve with me. I want to learn (brush wise) how to get rid of a brush mark when it is back in the history a ways without losing all of what I accomplished after that point.
Thanks again, have a great day.

I'm trying some of your brushes like the lips, hair strands, etc. and they all are very transparent. I'm using an older version of Photoshop but would that necessarily be the problem? Opacity is set at 100% but nothing seems to work. I can't even change the color of the very pale, light gray hair curl that I'm able to brush on. Very confused.
