I wish I could help more with GIMP, but I've never used the program. Sorry. :( I have no doubt you can find tons of GIMP tips out there on the internet, though!

Do you have any tips on brush technique for gimp? I am saving up for photoshop, so until then I use gimp. Is there a way to at least change the angle of the brushes with gimp?

Thanks a bunch
AJ

PS you have supplied me with a ton of knowledge, thank you so much for your generous contributions to the newbie novice.

It's been a while since I made this tutorial, but I'll guess that it was mostly single clicks with size and angle jitter set, so that I could get them placed somewhat where I wanted them. Scatter can be great for some things, but doesn't work as well with things that can't or shouldn't ever really overlap, like in this case. Patterns rather than textures, that kind of thing.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for this tutorial. Photoshop's brush dynamics panel is one of my favorite go-to tools. Can you give me some hints about your settings and how you moved your brush to get the paisley pattern that you show above? Did you use the scatter settings? Or, did you just randomly use your brush in single clicks around your page with the size and angle jitter set?

Thanks again!

Wow, that's odd. Never realized that Safari didn't recognize that as a downloadable file before. Other browsers seemed to have been downloading it alright, but Safari tries to open it for some odd reason. Anyway, I've made it a ZIP file now, so there should be no problem with recognition and it should be downloadable without any trouble now. :)

Thanks for the heads up, and sorry for the trouble!

This looks and sounds great but I'm having problems! I've downloaded SS-stitching.abr and have it working great, many thanks! but I can't download the single stitch file, for me the link here just goes to a page with a load of text and I don't know what to do with it, I have tried saving the text in the same place as the other, but my mac doesn't recognise it as a proper abr file. Is it available in the same format as the other one please? Sorry if I'm doing something stupid.

Well, if you're making the circle fairly small, then what's happening is the brush can't keep up with how fast that angle is changing, and it ends up looking like what you're seeing - with those really choppy angles. What you want to do is reduce the size of the brush, or make the stitch not quite as long, so that it's able to keep up with the angle changing better.

There ARE limitations on just how well the brush can follow a path, though, that's for sure. You can play around with the settings a bit to see what makes it look best, but basically this kind of thing is best used on larger, less intricate designs.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Steph, followed your script for "directional" flow using shape dynamics, on a square brush, set to about 150% spacing, to create "dashes"; but when I move my mouse in a circular shape the dashes created do not follow the angle of the cursor, in that they rotate only to 0, 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees; they do not position themselves to follow the angle of the path of the mouse. Is there some other setting I need to cause the dashes to rotate in smaller increments, so the dashed line will follow my cursor more accurately?

You can put it either on the design itself, or next to it if it's being displayed on a webpage (preferrably with a link to obsidiandawn.com). How you credit me is really up to you, as long as it's displayed along with the design that you used my resources in... every place that it's displayed.

Alternately, if you don't want to have to credit me, I also offer commercial licenses for resources, which are only $3 per resource and make it so that you don't need to credit me at all for their usage.

Hope this helps!
