when dealing with patterns I was having the same problem as Usagi. after google searching I found that you must create a new layer with the pattern and set that layer to overlay. That worked but when i came to the gradient I ran in to a problem I could do the same thing as I did with the patterns except since I changed the gradient layer to overlay there was no way set it to hard light which takes away from the whole effect of the flame.

Sounds like you're using Photoshop Elements. And yeah, this isn't the same in Photoshop Elements as it is in Photoshop (all versions of Photoshop from at least 7 onward, ie most of them, have that "f"). To follow this, you'll need to follow the idea behind each step, even if the execution of it differs a bit. In other words, when it says to make a new layer, even if the way you make a new layer differs in Photoshop Elements, you can still look up how to do it via a Google search, then follow along with the rest of the tutorial. Anytime something doesn't look right, you can look up how to do it, then continue. I'm afraid I don't have a version of Photoshop Elements to help you out, and I can't remember how to add effects to a layer. I know it can be done, and done in exactly the same way that you'll need to here - but I'm just not sure how to do it. Try doing an internet search for "adding patterns single layer photoshop elements" or somesuch, and they should be able to help you through.

Because that's what is missing here. It's applying the pattern to the whole image instead of just the new layer where you have the flame brush.

Sorry I couldn't help more!

I tried what you suggested, but when I added the pattern, it immidiatly made the pattern a new layer. :/
I think I may have a different version of photoshop, becasue I don't have the button with the 'f' on it.
I have New Layer, Create Adjustment Layer, Link Layers, Lock, and Delete.
I've been going to the Create Adjustment Layer and clicking on Pattern, and then it brings up a pop up screen that looks like the one you have.

Sounds to me like you're not adding a new layer when you're painting with the flame brush. If you paint it onto the same layer as the rest of your image, and then try to add a pattern to that layer, that's exactly what'll happen.

Check step 4 to make sure you did that one. That should solve your problem. :)

When I put the pattern on, it fills up the whole page. :/
I can't figure out how to make it just apply the the flame brush shape.

That is extremely odd. Sounds like it might have been a bad download. Try it once more, make sure it has a ZIP extention OR is already unzipped (and it should unzip into either a file folder or an ABR file and a text file).

Beyond that, click on "Installing Patterns" in my sidebar to understand how to install them.

@Laurie: Put them onto their own layer when you use them, (like it has you do in this tutorial), and then rotate them using Edit > Transform > Rotate.

Hope this helps!

Does anyone know how to turn the flames once you have them on your layer ? They seem to all to upward and am trying to create a flaming movement effect after something that would be running so would need them to flow towards the right ? Thank you !

Ok, i used your FABULOUS flame tut/abr/patterns to make some snazzy flames! Seriously my fave thing I've ever made digitally...uber realistic! Its posted to a number of my online galleries with credit and links to you where they're allowed, but thought you might get a kick out of this. Your flames have prompted a little discussion, and the general concensus is that they are the coolest thing ever!

my piece is here also

Wonderful, both the brushes and the tutorials.

Works smoothly in CS4 and 5.

The tutorial is really precise, down to the last step.

Thanks for making such great resources. :)
