Hair Strands Photoshop & GIMP Brushes

Category: Brushes | Tags: , , ,

A set of Photoshop & GIMP brushes composed of various strands of hair, mostly wavy. These are somewhat high resolution, with the average size being about 1000 pixels.

I bought one of those ponytail extensions with making these brushes in mind. My other hair brushes set is full of all kinds of things, from braids to bangs to ponytails…. but I wanted one that was more “strand-based,” if you will. Something that you could use to put all of them together to make a full head of hair. So, that’s what these should be able to do for you, if used correctly. The brushes are made up of all kinds of wavy strands.

Hair Strands Brushes

    i’m using photoshop cs3 , win XP
and i’m having problems in using the brushes, why?

  2. PJ: Are you unzipping them? I use them in CS3 without any trouble. Check out my tutorial on installing brushes, and if you’re still having trouble, let me know!

hey i had some problems downloading these, half way though….it said it couldnt find the other half of the file… could you help me??

  4. @Maree: I’m not quite sure what could be causing that problem, but I just downloaded them fine so the problem must be on your end. Maybe a firewall or something? Sorry I couldn’t help more! Perhaps it was temporary, too, so try again. If it doesn’t work, you could send me your email and I’ll try to send them to you.

i have gimp 2.6 and i downloaded this and it came 2 this allow or don’t allow i click allow and then it opened this file thing and now i dont know what to do help me?

  6. cookid

hei, thanks for the brushes. Would you mind explaining how to use them?
How to make them look natural and real? Please and thank you

  7. @cookid: To tell you the truth, I’m not a big user of these kinds of resources. I paint my stuff from scratch. I’ve seen some people do absolutely amazing things with these brushes to make some realistic hair, though… but I’m afraid I don’t really know what they do. You could check some of the tutorials on http://www.deviantart.com, which is where I’ve seen most of them used that well. Perhaps they’ve left some tutorials that explain it.

And sorry I couldn’t help more!

Im Using Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, Are Your Brushes Compatible With It? xx

  10. @Ellaarh: Nope, I’m afraid not. Not as they come. However, I have “image packs” available for all of my downloads, which are just JPGs that I used to make the brushes. You could download those and make them into brushes in your PSP program, and use them that way. Hope this helps!

    i love youuuuuuuu…thxxxxxx

    h3y stephanie….

I downloaded these brushes, but when I tried using them they seemed really faint, I created another layer but it’s still the same…. any suggestions on fixing this…. I didn’t have any problems with any other brushes….

  13. Some of these ARE faint, because they’re made from blonde hair. It’s more difficult to use these and get them to look right than to use others of my brushes, which is why I don’t make this “kind” of image-based brush much anymore. Check out my tutorial on “Removing Transparency from Brushes” – the technique used in this tutorial is basically what I used to make these brushes look a bit more real in the preview.

    Good luck!

BTW, if you want hair brushes that are all made from darker hair (and therefore make darker brushes) check out my “Hair Strands” set instead of this one. (Whoops, said this in an email before realizing that’s what page this was on, sorry!)

  16. random

um i have photoshop adobe 7 and it aint working!

  17. @random: Are you unzipping the file? Are you putting it in the right directory? Are you restarting Photoshop so it will show up along with your other brushes? (You can also “Replace Brushes” and find the file directly, if you don’t want to restart Photoshop)

  18. How do you unzip the files for gimp im using windows with office vista and i try and download when i do it and it opens gimp a message pops up saying it does not recognize or cannot open.

  19. @ashly: That’s because you don’t use them by clicking on the file like you would with other things. You put them in the correct directory, then they’ll just be there when you open GIMP. I have instructions in my sidebar, under “Getting Started” where it says “Installing Brushes”. Good luck!

  20. Dan

Is there any way you can make the brushes smaller once downloaded? I tried gimp brush editor but it says the brush is read only

  21. @Dan: I have no idea how GIMP does it. But in Photoshop, you can size the brush anywhere from 1 to 2500 pixels after you load it.

Sorry I couldn’t help more, but I’ve never used GIMP. :( Try some GIMP forums, perhaps? Maybe since these are Photoshop brushes (well, made in Photoshop, even though GIMP will allow you to use them), that’s causing the trouble. Not sure.

    hey, stephanie..
i was wondering: could you maybe do eyebrow brushes?
i can never get my eyebrows looking quite right lol
    xox

  26. @Anna: It’s one of the top requested sets, actually. I’m working on it, but it takes a while to get these right. Keep on the lookout for it, though!

Check out my newsletter, if you’re not already on it, to know when it comes out.

  35. @La Taunya: Yep, that’s how I tell everyone that is having problems to load the brushes. It’s not as convenient as having it show up right there in your list, but it works! :) Thanks for the tip!
