This tutorial will help explain how to use my Eyelashes and Eyeshadow brushes to create realistic looking makeup effects for eyes.
Things you’ll need:
- Eyelashes Brushes
- Eyeshadow Brushes
- Makeup-Free Eyes (optional – feel free to use your own photos if you wish)
Sidenote: Buying commercial licenses is now easier and faster than ever. We’ve added a shopping cart, so that you can add licenses to your cart, then proceed to PayPal for payment. And once you’re through, you’ll be brought back to ObsidianDawn.com and be able to print out your receipt and licenses. Previously, I was sending them out manually within 24 hours of a purchase, but now they’ll be available immediately. So, MUCH easier for both of us.
You’ll probably also notice that we’ve switched the design around a bit. Most of this was to help make the site more user-friendly. Buttons with access to our terms of use and how to install the resource, etc. all right next to the download button = a lot less emails asking the same thing over and over again for moi, and easier to find answers for you all.
You can watch the video tutorial below. If you can’t see details well enough, make sure you check the settings at the bottom of the video to make sure that you’re watching the HD version (1020p is what you want – the ability to change this will show up once you hit play, in the bottom middle of the video). You can then view it full screen using the bottom rightmost button, and you should be able to see everything clearly.

Yes this tutorial was very good, but it will take me longer to get ready to go out. I was using the Smudge Tool, but this was messy and you had very little control over the strokes, and i gave up.
Paintbrush
You don’t need to use the smudge tool with the eyeshadow brushes. That was the whole point of making them and showing this tutorial. :)
Loved the demo. Couldn’t wait to try & had a great result.
Thanks so much
Although I have collected and used your brushes for ages somehow I missed the wonderful tutorials. WOW! The portrait painting ones are FABULOUS! Thanks so much for sharing your talent!
That’s pretty cool! Ir’s like putting on my own make-up. LOL Great tut, Miss Stephanie! I followed along and I loved it! You do a good tut. Thank you!
Su
Do you want the credit for the brush on the picture itself, or if it’s on DA could it be in the description?
CAN YOU USE THESE BRUSHES FOR GIMP
Yes, but the steps in this tutorial won’t be the same. The brushes work, but the tutorial is made for Photoshop.
Do you have a tutorial for Gimp?
Afraid not. Never used GIMP. I may learn it someday, but right now I’d rather be able to keep putting out resources for everyone than take the time to learn a new program. Sorry!
I’m sure it’s similar in concept, though. As long as you know how to rotate stuff, add new layers, etc in GIMP, this would be the same in concept, just not in the specifics.
thanks so much for the tutorial and for making these brushes available! I have also watched your skin painting tutorial which is the best one I’ve seen. I can’t wait to put into practice what you have shown me!
Thanks again Stephanie

I really enjoyed the tutorial, but where can I find that eye shadow chart, that is excellent.
I actually made it myself. Sorry!
Thank you so much for these brushes and this tutorial!! Love it!!
Thank you very much…It’s very helpful…:D
Great tutorial. I’ve always had trouble with touching up around the eyes. These techniques will come in handy.
Great tutorial. It looks so simple! And the effect! I never used much make-up myself, but maybe I will start :) on my photos :)
Thank you for the great tutorial! I noticed that the eyeshadow colors (around 12:15 of the video) have a glimmery effect in the area around the inner corners of the eye — mimicking the look of shimmery eyeshadow. How did you achieve that? Or was it already present in the original photo? Your eyes are beautiful, by the way. :)
Hmm, I’m not really sure which glimmery effect you mean. I mean, I DO have a lighter color that I applied to that area, on the inner part of my lid. However, on the right side (the left eye), there’s also definitely a bit of shimmer there the entire video. Just the way the light’s hitting the skin, I guess.
You COULD do it, mind you. I’d suggest using my skin textures brushes for something like that, and lightening a few small random spots around the edge of the eye. Luckily, I have a video tutorial for how to use those, as well (although only a basic understanding of how the brushes should be used is shown). But playing around with them, you could definitely achieve something like that.
However, if it’s not just a single spot of lighter shimmer that you’re looking for, using a very light color on the lid and finding the right blending mode will achieve the look of a shimmery eyeshadow, as well.
Hope this helps!
Thanks for answering my question, and yes, it was helpful. I added this tutorial to my Pinterest board, and I’m looking forward to learning more from your other tutorials!
That is really cool man..I love to learn such type of things. Thanks ..
I can’t seem to use your brushes in my photoshop 7. I downloaded it and installed it many times assuming I might have used some corrupt files. But still no avail, and the ones that I installed using ur download link shows me brush options like flat bristle , round bristle. Please help.
The flat bristle and round bristle are the same ones that came with Photoshop. So, you’re definitely not loading these properly for whatever reason. Make sure they’re unzipped, make sure they’re in the right folder, and make sure you restart Photoshop. If you do all those things, they should definitely work.
If you’re still having trouble, try choosing “Load Brushes” or “Replace Brushes” from that brushes menu, navigate to the ABR file in an easy-to-find place, and load it that way.
I heard about your website while I was watching a Sue Bryce workshop on Creative Live. I was wondering if anyone uses Photoshop Elements 9. I have downloaded the brushes into Gimp AND Photoshop Elements. Since it’s Elements..I do not have an Append feature. Every time I click on an eyelash and go to place them on the eye..I get multiple lashes all over my image. Do you know if this is a download issue or is there some type of workaround for the Append in Elements and does that matter?
Hmm, that’s just odd. If you’re getting multiple lashes all over your image, it didn’t import the brushes correctly. They are supposed to be compatible with Elements 9, so I’m not sure what would be causing that. But basically, what’s happening is your setting for how many times the brush is being applied is off… as well as perhaps a scatter feature. I don’t know a lot about Elements anymore, so I’m not sure how to change these settings. But if you know how to change brush settings, it’s in there. Otherwise, an internet search should do you well. :) Just make sure it’s set to only apply ONE brushstroke per click, and doesn’t have any scatter effects on.
Hope this helps!
Thanks so much for the tutorial. It’s very helpful.
I love the brushes (both lashes and eye shadow) and you did such a great job with the tutorial. Like one of the other commentors, I’d love to get that eye shadow chart. Is there any way I can convince you to sell me a copy? It would make life so much simpler.
As I told them, I don’t have it any longer. I made it JUST for that video. However, you’re more than welcome to take a screenshot of the video playing or something and crop it down to have a copy. :)
Those are awesome. I started using false eyelashes in real life, but I thk I could really jazz up my pics of myself w/ these, the eyeshadow might be a bit hard right to start w/ but thanks, wish I could apply my real make-up that good! :D
LOVE the video! Thank you so vey much!
When i copy a layer and flip it it changes both layers what am i doing wrong?
thanks!
You need to put the eyelashes on their own layer. Make a new layer, apply the eyelashes on THAT layer, and then duplicate it to create a third layer. Then flip that third layer.
Very good tutorial. I love the make-up and colorcombinations. Even I can use some help afterwards as a makeup-artist :-) Thank you!
This was very helpful. Saw Lindsay Adler use your brushes on Creative Live’s Photoshop Week.
Glad that she got your name and website out there. Thanks so much for creating your website, brushes and tutorials.
Hi Stephanie. Thank you for the tutorial and the eyelash and eyeshadow brushes.
I am playing around with them in Photoshop Elements 11. Do you know how I can WARP them? There isn’t a warp in Elements 11 that I have found.
I’m sorry, I haven’t used Elements in a long while. But from what I could find on the internet, there’s a few ways to try to get around the fact that they don’t have anything like that in Elements. Hopefully this will help: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4051583?tstart=0
