About

Obsidian Dawn has been one of the most popular websites for finding free Photoshop brushes for over 15 years.

Small Family Business

This website and all the resources on it were created by one person -- me. Hi, I'm Stephanie! I'm the wife of a military veteran. I ran this website while I followed him all over the world. We now have a beautiful 7 year old adopted daughter, who is our world.

100% Originality Pledge

Everything on this website is 100% original and designed by me. If anything here bears any resemblance to AI generated images, it's because my stuff has been up on the internet for long enough to likely be the source of a lot of that AI's reference material.

Our Resources

Brushes

Brushes are made to be used in specific graphic design programs, like Photoshop, Procreate, or GIMP. There's two types of brushes: stamp and stroke brushes.

Stamp Brushes - These work much like a rubber stamp would, in that you pick a color that you want the brush to be painted with, click once on the canvas, and voila!  Whatever design the brush was made to be will show up on the canvas in that color, just like if you were to dip a rubber stamp into a colored ink pad and press it to a piece of paper.

Stroke Brushes - These were made to be painted with. Some of them will be cool random textures, others will mimic paint, and all kinds of other fun things. They work best with a in Photoshop using a pen and a graphics tablet or in Procreate on an iPad.

PNGs & Overlays

These are basically images. Most of them are made to be applied to your images or illustrations to create some kind of cool effect. Putting wings onto your little girl to make her look like a fairy, for instance. Adding a snowy overlay to your winter scenes to make it look like it's snowing. Stuff like that! They work with basically all programs that can edit an image.

Patterns

The patterns are designed to be used in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.  (There are plugins out there that will let you use them in GIMP, as well.)  They are seamless textures that, when applied, tile together seamlessly and cover the desired area with the pattern.

Tutorials

I used to have tutorials on my website, but these days I'll just send you on over to YouTube for full length tutorials and Instagram/TikTok for short little "how to" videos. Most of them explain how to make best use of my resources or answer common questions. Check out the links in my footer!
